On Saturday, Feb. 7, choir students competed in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble competition at Munster High School. The competition lasted from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and many gold medals were taken home.

“I’m so proud of the kids so far. They have worked so hard,” Mrs. Sandra Hobbs, Art, said.

The students competed in many different events such as piano solo, voice, barbershop quartets, and also small or large vocal ensembles in three different divisions: Group 1, 2 or 3. The students who were placed in Group 1 and took home a gold will advance to the State competition in Indianapolis on Feb. 21.

“I got a gold, so I think I did pretty well. There were some things I thought I needed to improve on, but hopefully I will be able to improve them for State.” Elise Bereolos (11) said.

The two swing choirs, Trebleaires and Counterpoints, competed this weekend as well. Counterpoints snatched a gold and a silver on their two ensemble pieces, and Trebleaires got a gold on their ensemble piece. Both choirs are headed to State.

“I feel like we did well with following each other for timing, and we need to improve on our diction and enunciation,” LeAnn Stutler (12) said.

Friends and family were also able to come and watch the students compete.

“I feel like it was fun to support my friends and see them do what they love by competing in song. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the boys barbershop quartet. It was cool to be able to be with my friends backstage before they competed, and I liked being there to see them do well on their songs,” Jackson DeLisle (11) said.
