Varsity tennis loses to Whiting Oilers

On  Friday, May 2, the girls tennis team traveled out to Whiting to compete against the Oilers. The varsity team lost 4-1. Last season the Indians beat the Oilers, so this time the Indians expected a win. Varsity coach Bryan Szalonek, who is good friends with the Whiting coach, was excited to have his team face his friend’s team.

“It was fun playing a friend because you’re always geared-up for it and I knew his team wanted to beat us because we beat them last year.  I wish we would’ve won, but they were the better team that day,” Mr. Szalonek said.

It was a difficult loss because of the strategy the Oilers used against the LC players. Although the Lady Indians had strong strokes and powerful volleys, the number one doubles varsity position struggled to keep up.

“I thought I played well, but we weren’t used to playing their strategies so it was pretty challenging. They never hit one ground stroke, and they lobbed it every time. We are not used to a point lasting a couple minutes. We are used to ending fast with strong strokes,” Emily Birlson (11) said.

The singles position was the same story.  Although she fought hard, number two varsity singles player, Navneet Kaur (11), was unable to defeat her opponent.

“I think I did pretty good but I could have definitely gotten more games out of her. I kind of gave up in the last game; I wish I didn’t,” Kaur said.

Although the Indians lost against the Oilers, the Indians are prepared to play their future opponents.  They will be playing Crown Point on Tuesday, May 6 at home.
