Blowing Portage out of the water

Brandon Walton (11) swims the 50 yard freestyle. Walton also swam in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay.

On Jan. 27, the varsity and JV boys swim teams competed against Portage. Both teams won every event.

“I think we did really well as a team because we were all swimming for sectional lineups, so we tried all of our hardest,” Zachary DeJoris (10) said.

Along with contributing to the team, Gavin Baisa (10) also improved his personal best.

“I had one good race, the 500 yard freestyle. I kept my cool, and on that final 200 [yards] I just went for it. I went for it. Then I won,” Baisa said.

Although the teams did well, the DAC is quickly approaching.

“During the normal season, we do distance sets, and we do a crazy amount of yardage. At the end of the season, when we get close to the important meets like Sectionals, State and Conference, we start to taper down and do sprints, preparing for the meets,” Baisa said.

The next swim meet will be the DAC Championship on Jan. 31 at 9 a.m. at Crown Point High School.
