Emma Weissbeck (12) signs to Purdue University Calumet for cross country. Throughout high school, Weissbeck has been a triathlete, participating in cross country, gymnastics and track and field.

Throughout their years of high school, some students work vigorously to become better at their sport, and college scouts take notice. Student athletes took the final step in being committed to their colleges of choice on Thursday, Nov. 12.

“Playing basketball in college] has always been a dream of mine, ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to play something in college. When I got to high school, basketball just came to be my sport,” Victoria Gard (12) said.

Student athletes are held responsible for managing time to finish schoolwork and to put in effort at practices and games. The hours of dedication the athletes put in reflect themselves as players.

“I worked so hard [in basketball] for four years in high school to get somewhere to pay for my education. It’s a lot [of work], but in the end it’s all worth it,” Gard said.

The athletes are very excited to be moving on to college, and have been preparing by practicing with intensity and purpose.

“I am really happy [about being signed] I am excited about just playing the games in general, and I don’t want to stop now,” John Mamelson (12)

Not only are the athletes excited, but the coaches are as well. The coaching staff at Lake Central is excited to watch players move on and be successful in their future with the sport.

“I am extremely proud of the hard work [in softball] and dedication they [Paige Carter (12) and Julia Schassburger (12)] put in,” Mr. Jeff Sherman, Math, said. “They both work hard; day in and day out, not just in games but also in practices. They put in a lot of time in the off season as well to get themselves into this position.”
