A big rivalry

Sara Zabrecky (10) looks for a pass to throw to her teammate. Zabrecky is one of five sophomores on the varsity team.

Basketball shoes skidded up and down the court on Wednesday, Jan. 10, when the girls varsity basketball team defeated Gary West Side High School 49-24.

“We knew that they had lost a great player last year, but we couldn’t underestimate them. We just knew that we had to come out strong,” Lauren Ladowski (12) said.

As the team got adjusted to the game and the other team’s key players, they fell behind in the first quarter with a score of 10-13.

“It’s a big rivalry. It’s always that way. I think we didn’t get off to a good start, [but] they fought through it. We got back to basics and got back to what we do well. I think overtime, in the course of 32 minutes, took its force,” Coach Joseph Huppenthal, Mathematics, said.

Despite a close first half, the team was still able to finish off the half leading 22-17.

“We know we can’t get too caught up in the heat of the moment. You can be a little physical, but you don’t want to take it too far at times,” Ladowski said.

The seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams from Clark, Grimmer and Kahler Middle Schools all cheered from the sidelines and were even highlighted during halftime.

“We know they all look up to us, so we knew we really had to play our best [and] keep our composure,” Ladowski said.

The girls’ next game is on Saturday, Jan. 13, away at Portage High School.

“Just take it one game at a time. We [have to] get back to work, back to practice and get better,” Coach Huppenthal said.
