Q&A: Martha Mapes

Q%26A%3A+Martha+Mapes

Q: What is your short film about?

A: My film is about a little boy who finds an evil book in the forest that sucks all of his family and friends inside it, and his struggle to get them out.

Q: How did you come up with the idea?

A: I  was driving with my dad and looking out the window, trying to come up with an interesting idea for the competition, and it just kind of popped into my head. I like to make movies about interesting or unusual events.

Q: How long did it take you to make it?

A: All in all, it took me about five months to complete.

Q: What was the competition about?

A: The competition was at the Thespian Indiana State Festival, for the short film individual event competition. Basically, the competition was a bunch of high schoolers from across the state getting together to show each other their films.

Q: What place did you receive and how was your reaction?

A:  My film got Best of State. One of the teachers told me I won when we came to our hotel at about 12:00 p.m., so I was so tired it didn’t even register. When I woke up the next morning and it actually registered, I was like, ‘Whoa, I actually won something!’

Q: Why did you decide to do claymation and not other styles of films?

A:  I’ve always been kind of obsessed with stop motion animation since I was a little kid. I’ve heard that at this particular competition there’s never been a stop motion animation entry before, so I decided to make one to showcase my talent and be unique.
