Pumpkin spice is a key component to fall culture to most people. Pictured is the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks.

Pumpkin spice flavoring is the epitome of fall for some. For me, not so much. Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and even Smoothie King have come out with pumpkin spice drinks for the season and frankly, it’s disgusting.

Every year, at the beginning of September, the hype about pumpkin spice starts again, but I don’t understand why. The flavor is not appealing at all. Ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg are all great spices individually and when they’re combined. But, when they’re combined with pumpkin, the flavor is ruined. The drink tastes stale; like all of the spices were dug up from the back of the cabinet and thrown together.

Pumpkin spices comes in several different drinks – lattes, hot and iced coffee, hot chocolate. It seems like they took the idea of this flavor and threw it into any drink they could find. They should have just kept the flavor in the classic pumpkin pie.
